History: Dormition of the Theotokos Church, Aboud
Aboud's Greek Orthodox church of the Dormition, also called Saint Mary's or Al-Aboudieh, preserves the village's earlier Christian architecture. Its history extends into the Byzantine period, while an Aramaic inscription records rebuilding in 1058 under Fatimid rule, before the Crusades. The church remains a parish sanctuary in the village centre, distinct from the nearby Latin Seven Sorrows church and Saint Barbara's ruined hilltop site.
An interesting detail
The rebuilding inscription is in Aramaic rather than Greek or Latin. It provides dated evidence that this church existed before Crusader rule, despite earlier assumptions of a Crusader foundation.
