History: Transfiguration Greek Orthodox Church, Ramallah
Ramallah’s larger Transfiguration church replaced an earlier, smaller Orthodox church in the mid-nineteenth century. Archimandrite Galaktion Awwad recalled that development in a 2016 interview. The sanctuary also serves a regional role: in October 2021 it hosted the patriarch’s liturgy and a pastoral gathering of priests from the Ramallah district.
An interesting detail
A patriarchal report of the Transfiguration feast here on 19 August 2015 records the blessing of grapes after Communion, a distinctive Orthodox custom associated with the feast.
