History: Immaculate Conception Church, Birzeit
Construction of Birzeit's present Latin church began in 1952 under Father Anton Buso and continued for two decades. The work provided employment and masonry training after the arrival of Palestinian refugees. Funding associated with the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico helped complete the church, consecrated in 1972 with the Marian titles of the Immaculate Conception and Our Lady of Guadalupe.
An interesting detail
The mosaic above the altar shows Our Lady of Guadalupe together with images of the Mexican basilica and the Birzeit church, linking the two communities visually.
