History: Old Saint George Orthodox Church, Birzeit
Saint George's old church stands in the eastern part of Birzeit's historic centre. The Jerusalem Patriarchate dates its foundation to 1871. Its small sanctuary also served weddings, funerals and community gatherings. A plan published in 2009 described space for about 100 worshippers, explaining the community's wish for a larger church; the cornerstone of that separate project was laid in 2013.
An interesting detail
The parish's community life includes a scout group founded in 1985 and a women's committee founded in 2002, both recorded in the Patriarchate's 2009 account.
