History: Good Shepherd Church, Jericho
Jericho's Good Shepherd parish church was built in 1924 to a design by Antonio Barluzzi. Franciscan friars serve the Latin Catholic congregation, whose life is connected with the nearby Terra Sancta school. On 21 April 2024 the community marked the church's centenary with a Mass led by the Custos of the Holy Land. The twentieth-century church belongs to Jericho's Christian history without being an ancient biblical building.
An interesting detail
The Latin Patriarchate explains the dedication through Jesus' care for Bartimaeus and Zacchaeus in Jericho: Mark 10:46–52 and Luke 19:1–10. It commemorates these narratives, rather than marking their exact location.
