History: Saint Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church
Saint Nicholas Church was built in 1925 by Beit Jala's local community using local stone and labour. It stands above an older chapel dedicated to Saint George. The site is associated in local tradition with a pilgrimage by Nicholas, bishop of Myra; that devotional association should be distinguished from the date of the present church. Its icons preserve the work of Palestinian painters alongside other Orthodox traditions.
An interesting detail
A research project digitised more than 150 icons here, many dating from the 1870s to the 1920s and belonging to the Palestinian Jerusalem School of icon painting.
