A brief history
Beit Jala's Catholic Church of the Annunciation was built in 1858 after an Ottoman decree authorised it. Known locally as Al-Bishara, it forms part of a complex with a school and the Latin Patriarchate's seminary. The seminary moved here from Jerusalem in 1936, linking the parish church with the training of diocesan clergy.
An interesting detail
The parish's educational work predates the church: its Latin school opened in 1854, initially for boys, and admitted girls two years later.
