History: Saint George Orthodox Church, Taybeh
Taybeh's standing Greek Orthodox church of Saint George was built between 1929 and 1932 for a community with much older Christian roots. It is one of the village's three parish churches, alongside the Latin Holy Redeemer and Melkite Saint George. The present sanctuary is distinct from the roofless Byzantine and Crusader church ruins on the eastern edge of Taybeh.
An interesting detail
Researcher Elizabeth Marteijn records that rebuilding work in 1931 uncovered fourth-century Christian mosaics at the Orthodox church, evidence of Christian presence much earlier than the modern sanctuary.
