History: Surp Takavor Armenian Church

Surp Takavor serves the Armenian Apostolic community in Kadıköy, on Istanbul’s Asian shore. The parish was mentioned in 1722 under the name Surp Asdvadzadzin and rebuilt in 1814. After the devastating fire of 1855, a stone church funded by Garabed Ağa Muradyan opened in 1858 under the name Surp Takavor. Schools were established in its courtyard in the same year, linking the church with the neighbourhood’s Armenian educational life.

An interesting detail

The benefactor Garabed Muradyan and his wife Hatun are buried in separate tombs in the courtyard.
