History: Saint Polycarp Church, İzmir

This Catholic church is dedicated to Polycarp, the early Christian bishop and martyr of Smyrna, now İzmir. Its origins lie in the seventeenth-century Capuchin mission. The parish’s architectural history describes rebuilding in 1775 after a fire and further enlargement with chapels between 1892 and 1898. The three-aisled interior contains paintings by Raymond Charles Péré and A. Scarselli from the 1890s, including scenes from Polycarp’s life and Christian scripture.

An interesting detail

Péré included what is thought to be a self-portrait in his painting of Polycarp’s martyrdom.
