Saint John Cathedral stands on Şehit Nevres Boulevard in central İzmir. Construction of this Catholic cathedral began in 1862, and it opened in 1874. Its building campaign received support across political and religious boundaries: Sultan Abdülaziz contributed gold in 1863, while Pope Pius IX gave the main altar.
