History: Crimean Memorial Church
Also known as Christ Church, this Anglican church in Galata commemorates British soldiers who died in the Crimean War. Construction began in 1858 on land provided by Sultan Abdülmecid, and worship began in 1868. George Edmund Street designed the executed Gothic Revival building. The church closed in 1978 and reopened in 1991, continuing the history of an Anglican presence in this part of Istanbul.
An interesting detail
William Burges won the original design competition in 1856, but Street’s later design was the one built.
