History: Church of Saints Peter and Paul, Galata

The Dominican church of Saints Peter and Paul stands below Galata Tower. Its present building was reconstructed in 1841–1843 to a design by Gaspare Fossati, following earlier churches damaged by fires. The Dominican community’s history in Galata reaches back much further than this nineteenth-century structure. A courtyard separates the church from the street, while the sanctuary contains a Hodegetria icon associated with Caffa in Crimea.

An interesting detail

Part of the church’s rear wall incorporates the old Genoese fortifications of Galata.
