History: Church of Santa Maria Draperis
Santa Maria Draperis is a Latin Catholic church reached by steps from İstiklal Avenue. Its community traces its origins to a chapel donated by the Draperis family in 1584. Repeated fires led to several rebuilding campaigns; the present church was rebuilt in 1769 after the fire of 1767. Behind its street entrance are a three-aisled interior, a decorated barrel vault and a bell tower partly hidden by neighbouring buildings.
An interesting detail
The main altar dates to 1772 and is made of pink Carrara marble.
