History: Cathedral of the Holy Spirit, Istanbul

The Holy Spirit Cathedral, often called Saint Esprit, is the cathedral church of Istanbul’s Latin Catholic apostolic vicariate. Built in the mid-1840s under Bishop Julien Hillereau, it is associated with architects Gaspare Fossati and Achille Bottazzi. Its Baroque design uses a three-aisled basilica plan. A historic crypt beneath the church contains the graves of Hillereau and Giuseppe Donizetti, the Italian musician known in Ottoman Istanbul as Donizetti Pasha.

An interesting detail

A statue of Pope Benedict XV was placed in the cathedral courtyard in 1921.
