History: Surp Asdvadzadzin Patriarchal Church

Surp Asdvadzadzin, the Holy Mother of God Patriarchal Church, stands on Şarapnel Street in Kumkapı, in Istanbul’s historic Fatih district. It is the church of the Armenian Patriarchate of Constantinople, whose offices face it across the street, and the patriarchate has had its seat in Kumkapı since 1641. The church has been through several fires; the present building is dated to 1826–1828, after its predecessor burned, and it was restored in 1902 and 1985.

An interesting detail

It is a separate building from Surp Vortvots Vorodman, the other Armenian church of the Kumkapı patriarchal quarter, which has its own profile in this guide.
