History: Cathedral of the Annunciation, İskenderun

The Cathedral of the Annunciation is the Catholic cathedral of the Apostolic Vicariate of Anatolia, in İskenderun. Carmelite friars built it between 1858 and 1871; after a fire in 1887 it was rebuilt between 1888 and 1901, and since 2003 it has been served by the Conventual Franciscans. Its roof and part of its walls collapsed in the February 2023 earthquake that struck Türkiye and Syria.

An interesting detail

It is also known as the Alexandrian Catholic Church, after Alexandretta, the city’s older name.
