History: Surp Vortvots Vorodman Church
Surp Vortvots Vorodman is the southern church of the Armenian patriarchal complex in Kumkapı. The complex was rebuilt in 1828 by Kirkor Amira Balyan and Hacı Devlet Garabetyan. A restoration associated with Istanbul’s 2010 European Capital of Culture programme brought renewed use to the building as a church and the Mesrop Mutafyan Cultural Centre. Its story connects nineteenth-century Armenian religious architecture with the modern conservation of Istanbul’s community heritage.
An interesting detail
The restored building combines its church identity with a cultural venue named for Patriarch Mesrop Mutafyan.
