History: Virgin Mary Syriac Orthodox Church
Virgin Mary Church is a Syriac Orthodox church in Qamishli, within the Archdiocese of Jazira and Euphrates. During his May 2026 visit, Patriarch Ignatius Aphrem II described the building as about eighty years old and recalled the community that built it despite limited resources. His account emphasised the generations of prayer associated with this particular church.
An interesting detail
Aphrem Karim, later Patriarch Ignatius Aphrem II, was consecrated a bishop in this church on 28 January 1996, taking the episcopal name Mor Cyril Aphrem.
