History: Church of the Holy Mother of God
The Church of the Holy Mother of God is an Armenian Apostolic church in Aleppo’s Suleimaniyeh district, built to serve the large Armenian community there. Its ground was blessed in 1972 in the presence of Catholicos Khoren I, construction was finished in 1982, and Catholicos Karekin II consecrated it on 1 May 1983. Much of the funding came from Armenian benefactors with roots in Aintab, today’s Gaziantep. It is regarded as the continuation of the old church of the same name in Jdeydeh, opened in 1429 and now the Zarehian museum.
An interesting detail
A khachkar memorial to the victims of the Armenian Genocide, by Sarkis Balmanougian, has stood beside the main entrance since 1993.
