Surp Hagop Church

Aleppo · Old Syriac Quarter · Armenian Apostolic

A brief history

Surp Hagop, meaning Saint Jacob or Saint James, is a small Armenian Apostolic church on al-Iman Street in the Old Syriac quarter of Aleppo. It opened in 1943 and was enlarged in 1962, a modest building serving a neighbourhood where Armenian and Syriac Christians have long lived side by side.

Saints & traditions

The church was enlarged within twenty years of opening, a sign of how quickly the quarter's congregation grew.
