History: Armenian Catholic Church of the Holy Cross

The Armenian Catholic Church of the Holy Cross opened in Aleppo’s Aziziyeh district in 1993. Architect Sarkis Balmanougian adapted traditional Armenian church forms to a small, irregular urban plot. A 2021 architectural study documents its cross-shaped plan, polygonal dome and beige limestone, showing how the building’s vertical composition gives it prominence among surrounding apartment blocks.

An interesting detail

Limited space prevented a large forecourt, so the entrance was given its own architectural frame with an arch and a pediment decorated with small arches.
