History: Cathedral of Our Lady of the Assumption

The Cathedral of Our Lady of the Assumption has been the Syriac Catholic cathedral of Aleppo since 1970, when the diocese moved here from its old cathedral, now the church of Mar Assia al-Hakim. The building was seriously damaged in the battle of Aleppo and stayed closed from 2012 to 2018. In September 2018 Patriarch Ignace Joseph III Younan reopened and rededicated it, and in 2019 Christmas was celebrated there for the first time since the reopening.

An interesting detail

Before the reopening, the Syrian artists known as the Badawi brothers repainted about 700 square metres of murals ruined in the war, one of the largest artistic projects in Aleppo since the fighting ended.
