History: Melkite Cathedral of the Dormition of the Virgin Mary

The Melkite Cathedral of the Dormition of the Virgin Mary stands in Aleppo’s historic Jdeydeh quarter. Daniel Demeter’s field guide dates its construction to 1834–1843 and records repairs after the 1850 riots. A later restoration followed damage during the Syrian war: Vatican News reports that Patriarch Yousef Absi led the cathedral’s reopening Mass on 23 April 2019.

An interesting detail

The interior has high vaulted ceilings and an intricately carved stone chancel, features documented by the field photographer before the wartime restoration.
