History: Saint John of Damascus Church
Saint John of Damascus is a Greek Orthodox church in Al-Assiya, within the old city. The Syrian archaeological encyclopedia records an inscription at its inner entrance dating the building to 1864; Noor Ghannoum’s architectural research corroborates this nineteenth-century construction. A restoration in 1999 removed plaster from parts of the interior, exposing the dark basalt columns and arches that distinguish the building.
An interesting detail
The three-aisled interior has galleries along three sides, while sixteen upper windows bring light above its basalt arcades.
