Mariamite Cathedral of Damascus

Damascus · Old City · Greek Orthodox

A brief history

The Mariamite Cathedral, also called the Maryamiyya Church, is one of the oldest Greek Orthodox churches in Damascus and holds the seat of the Greek Orthodox Church of Antioch. The church complex stands on the Street Called Straight, the thoroughfare named in the account of Paul's time in the city.

An interesting detail

It is a patriarchal seat rather than a parish church: the Greek Orthodox Patriarch of Antioch is based here.
