History: Saint Paul Syriac Catholic Cathedral

Saint Paul is the Syriac Catholic cathedral near Bab Sharqi in Damascus’s old city. An inscribed poem recorded by the Syrian archaeological encyclopedia documents its nineteenth-century construction. The same source reports that its southern section burned during the events of 1860 and was restored in 1863. The resulting church has a basilican interior with a central nave and two side aisles.

An interesting detail

The main wooden door carries hammered copper panels with Eucharistic symbols, including a chalice and wheat ears.
