History: Queen of the Universe Armenian Catholic Cathedral

The Armenian Catholic community opened its present Queen of the Universe cathedral in Bab Tuma in 1959, replacing its earlier church elsewhere in Damascus. Architectural research identifies the reused building as a Jesuit church constructed in 1930. The cathedral became the seat of the patriarchal exarchate established in 1984; an official patriarchal report also records a bishop’s installation here in December 2023.

An interesting detail

A circular window with a cross-shaped pattern overlooks the southern entrance portico; inside, four piers divide the cruciform church into three aisles.
