History: Surp Sarkis Armenian Apostolic Cathedral

Surp Sarkis stands just inside Bab Sharqi and belongs to Damascus’s Armenian Apostolic community. The Syrian archaeological encyclopedia records repairs to an earlier church in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, destruction during the violence of 1860, and rebuilding in 1866. The standing cathedral forms part of an episcopal complex with community buildings.

An interesting detail

Its rebuilt church has a cruciform plan, a rounded central dome and a bell tower beside the dome.
