CHURCH BUILDING
Chapel of Saint Ananias
Damascus · Old City · Roman Catholic · Franciscan custody
A brief history
This ancient underground structure at the end of the Street Called Straight in Old Damascus is held to be the remains of the house of Ananias of Damascus. Acts describes Ananias being sent to Saul of Tarsus, who regained his sight and was baptised, becoming Paul the Apostle. The identification of this building with that house belongs to Christian tradition.
Saints & traditions
The chapel lies below the modern street, so visitors go down a flight of steps to reach the level at which the city stood in antiquity.
