History: Saint Anthony Maronite Cathedral
Saint Anthony is the Maronite cathedral in the El-Deir area of Bab Tuma. Its present building belongs to the rebuilding of the Christian quarter in the 1860s; architectural research records further renovation in 1992. The church is part of the Maronite diocesan complex. Fides documented damage to the cathedral during shelling in January 2018.
An interesting detail
Two rows of square pillars support pointed arches and groin vaults, giving this courtyard church a markedly different interior from nearby flat-roofed basilicas.
