History: Saint George Syriac Orthodox Cathedral

Construction of Saint George Cathedral in Hasakah began in 1956. It belongs to the Syriac Orthodox Archdiocese of Jazira and Euphrates. A restoration programme started in June 2022 after engineers assessed structural damage, repairing walls and ceilings, domes, roofing and building systems. Patriarch Ignatius Aphrem II reconsecrated the renovated cathedral on 6 May 2026.

An interesting detail

Known locally as the Great Church, the cathedral can accommodate about 1,200 worshippers, according to the World Council of Churches' May 2026 report.
