A brief history
Saint Gregory the Illuminator Cathedral was completed in 1940 at the Armenian Catholicosate of Cilicia in Antelias. The Catholicosate had established its seat here in 1930 after exile from Cilicia. Archbishop Bedros Sarajian oversaw the cathedral project, designed by Mardiros Altounian. The building became a central place of worship for the re-established Holy See and the Armenian communities connected with it.
An interesting detail
The Catholicosate property had housed a Near East Relief orphanage for Armenian children from 1922 to 1928 before becoming the setting for the cathedral.
