A brief history
Completed in 1867, Saint George’s Greek Orthodox Church belongs to Batroun’s nineteenth-century architectural heritage. The Dibo brothers built it mainly from local sandstone, while limestone from nearby Thoum was used for the entrance. Its interior combines a high principal vault with a crossing vault over the altar. The church stands in the historic coastal centre, close to the fishing harbour and Saint Stephen’s Maronite Cathedral.
An interesting detail
Its iconostasis—the screen of icons separating the sanctuary from the congregation—dates from the 1880s.
