History: Saint Charbel of Edessa Church, Maad

Architectural research dates the present church at Maad to the first half of the thirteenth century, with later alterations. It stands over remains of an ancient temple and an earlier Christian sanctuary. Antiquities excavations in 1947 and the late 1960s lowered the floor, exposing Roman paving and a monumental threshold behind the apse.

An interesting detail

The dedication is to Charbel of Edessa, an early martyr, rather than the nineteenth-century Saint Charbel of Annaya.
