History: Our Lady of the Sea Church, Batroun

Our Lady of the Sea, or Saydet el Bahr, is a small Greek Orthodox church overlooking Batroun’s ancient sea wall. Built of local sandstone, it has a single barrel-vaulted space running east to west. Its preserved icons include works made by Isaac of Jerusalem in 1863. The church’s modest scale and stone construction tie it closely to the historic fabric of Batroun’s coastal quarter.

An interesting detail

The church’s sandstone is local to Batroun, linking its architecture to the surrounding coastal buildings.
