A brief history
Saint Stephen’s Maronite Cathedral rises above Batroun’s fishing harbour on the site of an earlier church. Built in the early twentieth century under the Italian architect Giuseppe Maggiore, it combines Byzantine and Roman forms with Gothic details. Local sandstone ties the large building to the fabric of the surrounding old town. Its harbour setting places it among the coastal city’s principal Christian monuments.
An interesting detail
The cathedral has three altars; a painting of Saint Stephen hangs above the central one.
