History: Saint Anthony the Great Maronite Church, Jaffa
Jaffa’s Maronite church was built in the early twentieth century as the community established itself in Ajami outside the old city. Iskandar Awad, also known as Howard Bek, financed the church compound and residences. Its patron is Anthony the Great, the Egyptian monastic saint.
An interesting detail
The Maronite church on Ha-Dolfin Street honours Anthony the Great, while Jaffa’s separate Latin church honours Anthony of Padua.
