History: Saint George Romanian Orthodox Church

The Romanian Orthodox establishment in Jerusalem grew from land acquired in 1912 for a church and pilgrim lodging. Saint George’s church received its foundation stone on 15 August 1935. Patriarch Justinian consecrated it on 28 May 1975, several decades after construction began.

An interesting detail

The church’s dedication to Saint George links its patronal feast to the Romanian Patriarchate’s representation in the Holy Land.
