History: Kidane Mehret Church
Emperor Yohannes IV founded the Debre Genet establishment in Jerusalem, and Menelik II continued its funding. Its Kidane Mehret church follows Ethiopian circular architecture: a domed rotunda surrounds a separate central sanctuary containing the tabot, the sacred altar tablet.
An interesting detail
The four sides of the central sanctuary carry inscriptions about the church’s construction in Amharic, Arabic, Italian and French.
