History: Saint Francis of Assisi Church, Acre
The Franciscans returned to Acre in 1620 after their medieval community had been displaced. Under Fakhr al-Din II they received permission to establish a church and an inn. Saint Francis of Assisi’s church belongs to this renewed Franciscan presence within the old city.
An interesting detail
This is a separate Franciscan church from Saint John the Baptist beside Acre’s lighthouse; both are listed by the Custody.
