MONASTERY
Stella Maris Monastery
Haifa
A brief history
Opened in 1836, the present Carmelite church and monastery replaced earlier buildings damaged and destroyed during periods of conflict. The church overlooks the Mediterranean from Mount Carmel. Its grotto is traditionally associated with Elijah; the nineteenth-century sanctuary is much later than the prophet’s biblical setting.
An interesting detail
Carmelite brother Luigi Poggi painted the dome in 1924–1928. Its biblical scenes include Elijah’s fiery chariot and David playing the harp.
