History: Saint Andrew Melkite Church, Acre
Acre’s Greek Catholic community emerged in the early eighteenth century as some Orthodox Christians entered communion with Rome. The community settled in the southwestern old city and built Saint Andrew’s church on the ruins of a Crusader church dedicated to Saint Anne.
An interesting detail
The two dedications record different layers of the site: Saint Anne belonged to the Crusader church, Saint Andrew to the Greek Catholic church.
