CHURCH BUILDING

Saint Louis the King Maronite Cathedral

Haifa · Maronite

A brief history

Construction of Haifa’s Maronite church began in 1883 and was completed in 1889 after an interruption. Archbishop Pierre Boustani consecrated it in February 1890. Dedicated to Louis IX of France, it records the growth of Haifa’s Maronite community in the late Ottoman period.

An interesting detail

The Maronite founders entrusted construction to Raji al-Qashqoush, a Melkite from Haifa, making the church’s building history an example of cooperation across Catholic traditions.
