History: Saint George Greek Orthodox Church, Acre
Saint George’s Greek Orthodox church preserves a Christian presence documented in Ottoman Acre. The traveller Eugene Roger reported a Greek Orthodox church and monastery during his 1631 visit. Gabriel Bremond’s account of 1666 describes the church’s renovation under Fakhr al-Din.
An interesting detail
Bremond’s 1666 description records an earlier dedication to Saint Nicholas, rather than the Saint George name used today.
