CHURCH BUILDING
Saint Elias Melkite Catholic Cathedral
Haifa · Melkite Greek Catholic
A brief history
Built in 1938–1939, Saint Elias became the Melkite cathedral after the community’s displacement during the 1948 war. The episcopal seat moved here from Haifa’s older church of the Virgin Mary. Its dedication honours the biblical prophet Elijah, rather than marking an established episode of his life.
An interesting detail
The mosaic on the cathedral’s front depicts Elijah’s ascent to heaven, bringing the story told in Second Kings into the church’s public-facing decoration.
