A brief history

Consecrated in 1931 above remains of earlier churches, this sanctuary commemorates Peter’s denial of Jesus and his repentance. Tradition links the site to the high priest Caiaphas, but the location of his house is disputed. The ancient pit below is not proven to have imprisoned Jesus.

Saints & traditions

Gallicantu means at the cock’s crow. The name recalls the Gospel moment when Peter remembers Jesus’ warning and goes outside to weep.

Bible connections

Luke 22:54–62
