MONASTERY
Abbey of the Dormition
Jerusalem · Mount Zion

A brief history
Consecrated in 1910, the Benedictine church was designed by Heinrich Renard on Mount Zion. It honours Mary’s Dormition, or falling asleep in death, associated with this place by Christian tradition. The New Testament does not narrate Mary’s death or identify the location of this event.
An interesting detail
The crypt’s reclining figure of Mary lies beneath a mosaic showing Christ with six women from the Old Testament, joining biblical figures to Marian devotion.
