A brief history

Constantine’s first church was dedicated in 335 around places Christians venerate as Golgotha and Jesus’ tomb. Rebuilding over many centuries shaped the present complex. Its ancient devotional geography commemorates the crucifixion, burial and resurrection; the standing church is not a first-century building.

An interesting detail

The circular Anastasis surrounds the tomb shrine. Its name means resurrection, expressing the event that gives this part of the church its meaning.

Bible connections

John 19:17–20:18
