History: Ecce Homo Basilica
Built for the Sisters of Notre Dame de Sion, the Ecce Homo basilica was completed and consecrated in 1868. Architects Honoré Daumet and Christophe Mauss designed it in a Roman-Byzantine style. The sanctuary incorporates the northern opening of a Roman triple arch.
An interesting detail
The incorporated arch belonged to a gateway built under Hadrian; the Ecce Homo association with Jesus’ trial is a later devotional tradition.
